We Are Beautiful Magazine Article

I had a ton of fun working with We Are Beautiful Magazine to create this piece.

Here are some screen shots of the article. And here is a link to the video that I shared with their community. We Are Beautiful Video.

I’ve also included the text of this piece, because the pictures are hard to read.

My Story:

The camel’s back had to be broken twice in one week before my pain became greater than my complacency. The first straw that broke my back happened when a supervisor reprimanded me by saying, “What makes you think that you don’t have to do what I tell you to do?” That question literally crushed my spirit. I felt angry, disrespected, enslaved and degraded. But I did what I was taught by previous supervisors; I took my beating humbly and then went home to lick my wounds.

Two days later I was at home playing with my five year old daughter and three year old son in our basement. At the end of a good 30 minutes of wrestling around, it was time to clean up. As many of you know, the primary job of young kids is to test boundaries, and that day they chose to protest cleaning up the mess that they had made in the basement. After a good ten minutes of me being the nice dad, I suddenly became the angry father and said, “What makes you think that you don’t have to do what I tell you to do?” And that was the second straw that broke my back that week.

What I learned was that hurt people, hurt people.

Those two events, while they may sound minor to others, to me were a huge assault on my deepest values. I didn’t know this at the time but my top five values (in no particular order) are/were Creativity, Family, Teaching, Fitness and Mindfulness. Not only was I treated in a way that was offensive to my values, I was then treating my family in a way that was offensive to my values.

Those experiences triggered a radical change in my lifestyle. I quit my job and spent some serious time meditating, praying and journaling. Out of that deep work came the desire to become an entrepreneur and start my own business as a High Performance Business Coach.

Before starting that business, I became certified as an Elite Life Coach. Over the course of a year, I worked with two business coaches to help me think differently about beginning that important work. What I learned was that 80% of success in any business comes from mastering one’s internal game. Having the mindset of a champion allows you to show up like one in all that you do. As I mastered my inner game, I realized that I was really good at helping others master theirs.

Now, as a High Performance Business Coach I help people to master their mindset so that they can master their business. I have worked with small to medium size business owners that are “doing everything right” but are not getting the results they desire. Some are starting businesses and others are trying to take their career to the next level. I help them figure out a new way to connect the dots for financial growth and personal freedom.

I absolutely LOVE the work that I do now. I think differently. I speak differently. I act differently. I am living my values as a parent and as a professional.

Favorite Quote:
Our Greatest Fear —Marianne Williamson
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

What makes you beautiful?

I am beautiful because I understand my paradoxical nature. I am strong yet vulnerable. I am extroverted yet able to find peace being alone. I am a leader when that is needed and a follower when that is needed. I smile at my happiness and my sorrow. Beauty is a way of thinking and I practice it regularly through meditation and mindfulness.

I’m no stranger to being kept up at night thinking about all of the things that could possible go wrong. I’ve made career shifts, knowingly took on high stress jobs, invested in rental property and started my own business. I’ve thought through all of the worst case scenarios multiple times.

A good part of my life in my 20’s and 30’s was spent worrying about all of the above. Through the practice of meditation and mindfulness I’ve noticed that the root cause of my worries, comes from my discomfort with uncertainty. I know that this is a topic that many people are challenged with so I wanted to share this with all of you.

Uncertainty is a fact of life, and it doesn’t go away, but the way that you experience it and see it can change.

Some people see uncertainty as something scary. It is synonymous with uncontrollable change and tends to be something that happens to you. This can often allow someone to live with a worldview of fear, believing that bad things will eventually happen to them, that they are not in control of their path, and that other people are, more often than not, trying to take advantage of them.

Others see uncertainty as opportunity. A challenge that you are ready for and able to overcome through hard work, intelligence, and connection with other thought leaders. These people tend to believe that, more often than not, people want to see them succeed. They use uncertainty as an opportunity to prove themselves right about who they are and how they want to show up in the world.

Do you look at uncertainty in your life and see it as the world setting you up to fail, or is it the world encouraging you to grow and overcome adversity? You get to decide which perspective benefits you the most.

A mentor of mine, that makes 6 figures a month, shared that his comfort with uncertainty was in direct relationship to the amount of success that he has had.

The value of uncertainty for him was that it was an opportunity to reconnect with his highest values and skill sets. He intentionally used uncertainty as an opportunity for personal, professional and spiritual growth.

I’ll be the first to say that there is no “silver bullet” when it comes to dealing with uncertainty, but here are some tangible steps that may help you make friends with uncertainty so that you can have a great night sleep:

– Take 6 minutes to write down all of your nervous thoughts and worries. Then write a different more true story about yourself. A story about how you have overcome adversity, how you have figured out solutions to difficult problems and how exactly you did it.

– Pain often comes from our attachment to the idea of how things are “supposed to be” rather than “how they actually are”. Show up with confidence, kindness, a deep knowledge of the topic at hand and then let the rest go. I think Teal Swan nails this concept in the following quote:

“Whatever is happening is obviously supposed to be happening because it is happening, so I remain open to seeing why”. The circumstances you are experiencing are not the cause of your suffering. The cause of your suffering is the thought that what is happening should not be happening or is not supposed to be happening. ~ Teal Swan

– Become more aware of how you react to uncertainty when it arrives. Embrace that you get to control how you respond to whatever you are uncertain about. Then look for ways to see this challenge as an opportunity for you to prove yourself right about how amazing you are.

– Take a moment to reflect upon what type of similar challenges have you faced in the past. How did you overcome those challenges? Can you use a similar strategy this time around?

– Limit “what if” questions. Have you ever been part of a meeting or a class when a simple question suddenly turns into a giant “what if” session? This question definitely has its place, but that place shouldn’t be in the spotlight for long.

The above work requires a deeper shift internally. It is not a quick fix, but rather a long term mindset shift that happens over the course of weeks and months.

Give it a try and find others to support you with these efforts. If you are sleeping better, then this is a sure sign that what you are doing is working.

With Clarity, Confidence and Focus,

I don’t get it, what exactly do you do?

People know that I am all about the deep work of “High Performance Coaching Through Self Mastery”….. but what the hell does that mean?

The simplest way for me to put it is:

When discipline, hard work, confidence and knowledge aren’t getting you the results that you are looking for then some deeper work needs to be done. I help people do that deeper work so that they can connect all of the dots together and achieve the results they are looking for.

When people are doing “everything right”, and still aren’t finding success, I help them figure out what the missing link is. This important work allows my clients to do the following:

– Grow their business faster
– Quit a job that they hate so they can find a job they love
– Be the parent that they want to be
– Become more physically fit
– Figure out how to do work that they love and get paid for it
– Implement the spiritual practices that they love to talk about but don’t do
– Be happier more often

Think of an olympic gymnast doing a front flip on a balance beam. The gymnast is the one that has to do the flip, but she can’t see her growth areas as quickly or clearly as her coach can. Her coach gives her a perspective from outside of herself AND offers specific strategies and methods for success. Her coach holds her accountable and supports her through the difficult work so that she gains the mental clarity, confidence and focus that she needs to complete that front flip on the balance beam. Her coach helps her turn off the voice that says “I can’t” or “I don’t know how” and turn on the voice that says “I can” and “I will figure out a way”.

I do this important work 3 different ways:

1. High Performance Accountability And Support: This type of work is focused around helping people who “know what they want…. get it”. People that work with me in this capacity have super busy lives and tend to be doing some of the following: Raising kids, starting their own business, working 70 hours a week, helping care for aging parents, or going back to school to get a masters or bachelors degree.

These types of clients meet with me for 1 hour at the beginning of the month to get crystal clear on what they want to accomplish over the next month or two and then create a solid action plan for how to achieve it. They also get 20 minute accountability sessions on a weekly basis throughout that month to accelerate the results they are looking for.

2. Group Coaching for Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs – This coaching program is about helping powerful people connect with other powerful people in a way that promotes learning, collaboration and making money. It is for leaders that are ready to level up their personal and professional lives while surrounding themselves with other high achievers.

I meet with people in this group 2x a week. Once for a 30-45 minute individual coaching session and again in a group setting where I train them on a specific topic and then lead a discussion. The discussion is focused on supporting one another and sharing resources. This is a high impact experience that takes place over 10 weeks!

3. Individual Coaching – This option is for people that are making a serious commitment to leveling up their personal and professional life. This option includes weekly meetings for 60-90 minutes where we dig deep into who you are and what you want to accomplish. We then create a high impact action plan where we have regular check ins and strategy sessions throughout the week.

This work is highly personalized so that you get the support that you need to get the results you are looking for. This work will be challenging, but it will also be exactly what you need to grow your business or find greater fulfillment in your personal and professional life. People that work with me on this level are committing to at least 2 months of intensive work.

I LOVE using my skills and talents to help AMPLIFY yours! This high impact work will give you the clarity, confidence and focus that you need to accomplish your most important work.

YOU are THE REVOLUTION that you have been waiting for! The world needs your unique gifts and talents, unleash them on the world!

Success In 2016 Starts Today!

I believe that “YOU ARE THE REVOLUTION that you have been waiting for”. Here is an abbreviated version of how I have been helping people start that personal revolution for 2016. I did this work with people over the course of 4 days, so feel free to break it down in whatever way that works best for you:

1. Write down at least 5 things that you are super proud of accomplishing this past year. These can be personal or professional accomplishments, but they need to be BIG!

2. Where are you right now in your business or personal life? What is going absolutely fantastic with how you do your work, or how you are living your life? Write down a couple of things that you MUST KEEP DOING in your Personal and Professional Life. Think of it like this, you must keep doing these things because it works and you are getting great results.

3. Think about how you work or live daily and write down 2 or 3 things that you MUST STOP doing. Give yourself a minute and go deep with this. What activities or routines are distracting you from getting the results that you are striving for? What choices do you need to make to minimize or eliminate these distractions?

4. You did not start a business so that you could be a slave to it, working all of the time, having high levels of stress and not having the time to live out your highest values. You most likely created this business because you want to live a life of purpose and make a living doing things that you love!

Take some time to reconnect with your reason why. Why are you doing this work? What are your highest values and why is this path the one that allows you to live them out? Why did you pick the non traditional road of being an entrepreneur or a business leader?

5. What does success look like for you on a personal and professional level? What does it look like and feel like when your reason why connects with what your view of success is? What does success look like and feel like? What are you doing? What is happening in your personal and professional life when this is happening?

6. Sit with the above vision for a bit. Decide if this is really what you want. You may need to do this exercise a couple of times to get to the root of what you really want, quite often we create stories about what success looks like from outside of ourselves. Stories about what society says is successful. Leave that behind, define success for yourself and deeply understand what it looks like, feels like and tastes like.

7. Take the notes that you’ve taken from the above work and streamline it into a paragraph that you can tuck away into your journal. Knowing what success looks like, sounds like and feels like helps create a clear vision for where you want to go and what you want to accomplish in the future. Also, give yourself permission to let this vision change as you grow and change. Use this vision as an anchor that will keep you grounded and focused on the results that you are working towards.

8. Take some time to sit down and answer this question: Do you believe that you can have the success that you visualized or is what you are visualizing a wish? Sometimes we lie to ourselves and try to positive self talk our ways into achieving goals. The type of success that you and I are striving for, comes from a deeper place than positive self talk or hopes/dreams. It comes from a place of deep belief and understanding of who you are and who you know you will become. So do you believe deep in your soul that you can accomplish the type of success that you visualized?

9. The type of success that you want to achieve will not come easily, there will be all sorts of different sacrifices and pain that you will experience along the way. Because you are a high achiever, this type of sacrifice and pain is not something new to you. Think about and write down a similar level of challenge that you have taken on in the past. Running a marathon, starting a business, finishing a bachelors/masters degree, living in a different country and not knowing the language, etc. hind sight is 20/20, what did you do to achieve success in that situation? What exactly did you do to make success happen in the past? Be specific.

10. Now reverse engineer your first 2 months of 2016. You know what the ultimate goal of success looks like for you, now break it down into tangible steps. If you wanted to run a marathon your first step after committing to the process would be to make sure that you have running shoes, and time set aside to train. Then you would set a small goal of running for 30 minutes 5 days a week, then expand it to running for an hour, then expand it to running a certain distance. Spend time breaking down your plan for the first 2 months of 2016, like this. Break it down to daily activities, find people that will support you and hold you accountable, and finally DO THE WORK.

I am so excited for all of you! If you get stuck at any point in this process let me know, I can give you some help.

Too Many Voices

When I listened to too many voices I lost my confidence, my vision and my ability to focus.

Similar to my post about hiding in my pursuit of knowledge. This time I was hiding from my true calling by burying myself in the advice that others would give me.

Please learn from me, STOP listening to everyone! Spend time LISTENING TO YOURSELF FIRST by creating a disciplined practice where you spend time journaling or being in meditation/prayer on a regular basis.

After doing that for a while then rebuild your network of mentors/teachers/advisors. Think about 2 or 3 people who can help you bring your game up to the next level and only listen to them. Then cut everyone else out.

That is when real results start to happen!

You are the revolution that you have been waiting for! The world needs your unique gifts and talents, unleash them on the world!
